Environmental problems and their effects in Bangladesh

Global environmental issues/problems

  • Why problems created-

  1.  Massive input for human livelihood
  2. To fulfill of demands of human
  3. For creating comfort of human
  4. For ensuring security of human

  • Results due to these negative influences on natural ecosystem/nature

  1. Rapid increase in greenhouse gasses
  2.  Large scale deforestation
  3. Severe land degradation
  4. Loss of huge diversity
  5. Environmental pollution

  • Environmental problems/catastrophes

  1. Greenhouse effects
  2. Massive warming
  3. Sea level rise
  4. Ozone layer depletion
  5. Climate change
  6. Loss of fertility
  7. Decrease in agro-product
  8. Health hazard
  9. Environmental refuge
  10. Massive economic loss

  • Ultimate results/consequences/effects: The overall global environment problems lead to ecological disasters affecting the entire life and the support systems existing on our planet-THE   EARTH.
  • Some global environmental agreement-
  1. Ramsar convention: The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. It is also known as the Convention on Wetlands. It is named after the city of Ramsar in Iran, where the Convention was signed in 1971.
  2. UN conference on human environment ( Stockholm conference): The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was held in StockholmSweden from June 5–16 in 1972
  3. Earth summit (Rio Summit,Brazil): The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), widely known as the Rio Earth Summit, was held June 3 – 14, 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Rio Summit focused on developing a global framework for addressing environmental degradation through sustainable development.
  4. Kyoto protocol: The Kyoto Protocol is an international treaty which extends the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that commits State Parties to reduce greenhouse gases emissions, based on the premise that (a) global warming exists and (b) man-made CO2 emissions have caused it.
  • Environmental problems in Bangladesh-
Due to direct or indirect effects of global problems, some environmental problems/catastrophes have also been created in Bangladesh.
  • Prominent environmental problems of Bangladesh
  1. Climate change-     the Abnormal increase of temperature and warming                                                                                                     Abnormal and excessive cold                                                                                                                Abnormal and excessive rain                                                                                                                   Excess humidity
  2. Natural calamities- Flood, Tornado, cyclone, Landslide, Earthquake etc
  3. Desertification in northern part of Bangladesh
  4. Massive habitat/ land loss
  5. Denudation of forest cover
  6. Massive environmental pollution mainly urban areas-Air, water pollution mainly due to industrial wastes and sewage
  7. Acid rain in some parts of Bangladesh
  • Consequences/effects due to environmental problems in Bangladesh
  1. Loss of land fertility
  2. Degradation of productivity
  3. Massive erosion and siltation
  4. Loss of plant, animal, and microbial genetic resources
  5. Threatening of biodiversity
  6. Emission of greenhouse gases
  7. Creation of health hazard
  8. Outbreak of different fatal disease
  9. Loss of wildlife
  10. Loss of natural resources and heritage
  11. Increase of salinity
  12. Drought
  13. Scarcity of pure drinking water
  14. Water logging
  15. Migration of birds
  16. Increase of landless people and refugee
  17. Enhancement of poverty
  18. Lowering of GDP and livelihood
  19. Involvement of additional manpower
  20. Investment of huge money
